Most horses that compete today are Thoroughbreds, Thoroughbred-crosses (including the Irish Horse), and lightly built Warmbloods, or Warmbloods with a high degree of Thoroughbred blood, such as the Trakehner.
What breed of horse is used in eventing?
Thoroughbreds are also commonly used as sport horses, particularly in eventing, and some have been bred specifically as sport horses, rather than as race horses. Such Thoroughbreds tend to have a heavier sport horse build, rather than the leaner conformation of a race horse.
Is cross country safe for horses?
While horses can sustain catastrophic injuries on cross country that lead to euthanasia, cardiovascular and pulmonary (lung) compromise can also cause sudden equine death in eventing.
